Painting of a Fot by Dr K Prabhakar Rao

NAWALKAL FORT, DIST RAICHUR, KARNATAKA STATE, INDIA

NAWALKAL is a small village on the road Raichur to Mudgal. The village falls in Doab between Krishna and its tributory Tugabhadra river and is a fertile delta. Many fierce wars were fought between Bahmani sultans and Vijaynagar Kings for this area.Raichur fort which was impregnable played dominant role in these battles. Both the Kings wanted to have control over the fort. Even after break up of Bahmani Kingdom and establishing of five Deccani sultanates, the struggle continued. Bijapur sultans fought constantly for this area. Krishna deva Raya captured Raichur fort after a great battle which he personally led and Portugese shooters with matchlocks helped him.. Therefore, nearly ten small and big forts were built in this area to ensure good control. NAVALKAL is built on a rocky hill with astonishing rock formations. This fort was used probably for resting purposes and as army barracks when the Kings and officers and men travelled from Raichur to Mudgal or vice versa.Though the fort looks small from distance , probably it has large space inside. The builders used rock formations skillfully to build the fort,
